Un Paris PAPILLON

I created this journal a few months ago, but was inspired by this weeks challenge at Simon Says Stamp and Show to finally get my rear in gear and share it! (Plus, I've never posted anything through Simon Says Stamp, but I've been wanting to for awhile). I think I've been a bit hesitant because I was unable to really capture the beautiful shimmer of this project and didn't feel the photographs did it proper justice. (If anyone has some tips on photographing shimmer/shine on projects, I would love to hear from you)! Anyway, the challenge was to "stamp and show" something "London, Paris or New York." So here it is... my Paris Butterfly Journal!

The front and back pages are very similar, but the front has the addition of the butterflies. I used two stamps- both from the Stampers Anonymous/Tim Holtz Papillon Set. I worked on Kraft paper which is probably my most favorite medium to work with at the moment. You can't really see it in the first two photos, but there is a gorgeous shimmer which I created using the Ranger Perfect Pearls Mists in Heirloom Gold and Turquoise.

You can see some of the shimmer here, but not the intensity of the color- it especially looks beautiful over the black ink.

I used plain black cardstock for the inside covers and again utilized the Perfect Pearls Mists to add this lovely shimmer and touch of color. It actually shows up pretty beautifully in this following photograph.

The pages of the journal are also Kraft and I bound my project using my beloved BIA (Bind-It-All)! This is hands down my favorite handmade journal so far and I haven't decided yet whether I am going to allow myself to part with it or not. Yes... selfish, selfish, selfish! (grin)

Charmed! (Tim Holtz Inspired Purse Charms)

I recently had the pleasure of participating in a Tim Holtz inspired purse charm swap. I had never made purse charms before, but I find it fun to get away from paper-related crafting every now and then. For this swap we had to create two purse charms (one for each of our two partners). My favorite thing about these charms is that I ended up using elements which all came from different people through various other swaps I've done. The only part of these charms that I had previously purchased myself were the Tim Holtz clasps. The reason I ended up being so pleased with how these turned out is that even though all the elements were from different sources, they were all perfectly color coordinated!

I decided I wanted to create a special little presentation for my partners so I created petal boxes using some of my Tim Holtz card stock. I then wrapped some hemp around them with small name tags threaded through.

I hope you've enjoyed this little project share! I've noticed I hold myself back from blogging because I feel like I should only post when I have some massive project or a tutorial, but that's just silly. I'm going to try to start just sharing what I do because it honestly is what I love!

Altered Board Book: Love Theme

It has been awhile since I spent more than a few hours on any one particular project. Recently I joined a swap (through swapbot) where I had the opportunity to do just that... spend A LOT of time on one project. The swap was for altering a children's "chunky book" in a love theme. The experience was a little nerve-racking at first because I had a bunch of muddled ideas running through my head, but I couldn't get myself to commit to any one particular direction. I started with the cover first and once that was done the entire book just started coming together. So here it is... my very first Altered Board Book (Love Theme)!

I used Kraft card stock to cover all of the pages of the book before beginning. For the cover I utilized various stamps to create a lovely background. I then used Tim Holtz dies to create the flourish accents (that was from the Hanging Sign die) and the center bookplate (which I die cut from an aluminum can and colored with Ranger Alcohol Ink). I also created a closure with the Hardware die, grungeboard and a hitch fastener (an idea which I picked up from Tim Holtz). Other supplies used were gel pen, brads, E-6000, Rock Candy Crackle Paint, vellum paper with the word "love" and Distress Inks. The binding on the spine is Tissue Tape.

Next up is pages one and two. These pages are a combined theme and I used the post card as a way of turning them into a cohesive unit. I wanted these pages to reflect vintage inspired love letters and postal themed elements. I created a small tear in the post card for visual interest. When adhering this card, I left a space that was not glued down so I could have a small pocket affect for a tag. The tag was created using bronze UTEE and a postal rubber stamp.

Page two contains an excerpt from a love letter between Robert Browning and Elizabeth Browning. I hand wrote this on a linen textured card stock that I then crinkled and rubbed Vintage Photo Distress Ink over. The seal was created using bronze UTEE and a wax seal. I also added a Tim Holtz pen nib to this page.

Page three was created with two La Blanche stamps and a Tim Holtz stamp then colored in with a variety of Distress Inks. I also removed two of the books pages and used tissue tape to fill in that gap which you can see between page three and four.

Page four was inspired by an ATC I recently created- it is essentially a larger scale version of the same design, but I loved it so much I had to use it for this book. The two adorable little valentine children came from The Graphics Fairy blog (if you love vintage images, you MUST check this site out). I printed the saying out on my computer and the background is comprised of various Tim Holtz "grunge" background stamps and Distress Inks. I also used Glossy Accents over the heart on the little girls pants.

The final pages are a combined theme just like page one and two. For these pages I used these mini paper bag style envelopes and inserts for excerpts from a book titled, This Is My Beloved by Walter Benton. The keys and key holes were die cut from the Tim Holtz/Sizzix Hardware die and given a coating of bronze UTEE. Again the background consists of Tim Holtz background stamps and Distress Inks.

Here is an example of the cards inside the envelopes... they are all hand written. I distressed the edges of each one using my Tonic/Tim Holtz paper distresser and then added Vintage Photo Distress Ink.

And finally, the back cover... I spritzed over the back with a shade of Glimmer Mist (Red Velvet) and also a shade of Perfect Pearls Mist (Heirloom Gold). You can also see the full grungeboard closure here.

And that's that! I'm not going to lie... I had a hard time letting this one go! I just hope the person who received it really loves looking at it as much as I loved making it. I guess that's all we can really ever hope for when we put our heart into something and give it away to someone else.

Grungy Scrap Flowers (Tutorial)

As many of you know I have a bit of a problem when it comes to craft supplies... I love to buy them and I love to hoard them. So, in an effort to get this little (uhm... more like big) problem under control I am making 2012 the year to use what I have! Aside from the small moments of panic when I think about not buying any non-essential craft supplies, this challenge has actually been really great for my creativity! I have found myself digging into supplies that were long ago forgotten, finding ways to utilize the massive pile of scrap paper I have and also trying to craft outside my usual comfort zone. I have been feeling more free to create and experiment and just have fun doing what I love to do!

This past week I tried to re-create some paper flowers I had seen in a magazine- the kind created by cutting a circle into a spiral and then wrapping it around itself. I wasn't very pleased with the result and decided that instead of frustrating myself, I would simply go in another direction. This is what I came up with...

The great thing about these flowers is ALL the paper I used is from small scraps of Kraft paper that were- in my opinion- too big to throw away, but just too small to really use for anything else (did I mention I hoard?). I also had the chance to use a stamp I have never used before and I am super pleased with the result! I call these my little grungy scrap flowers. Here's a bit of a close-up...

Want to make some yourself? You can! They are super easy (and only slightly time consuming depending on how many you make at one time). So what will you need?

Basic Supplies:

- Circle Punches in various sizes (I used my 1", 1 1/4", 1 3/8", 1 1/2")

- Love Definition stamp from the Tim Holtz/Visual Artistry clear stamp set Purely Random (or of course any stamp you prefer)

- Memento Ink

- Distress Ink (I used Victorian Velvet, but again, any color you prefer)

- Ink Blending Tool

- Tim Holtz/Tonic Paper Distresser

- Bone Folder

- Paper Piercer

- Craft Foam

- Mini Brads (mine are copper)

- Ranger Craft sheet to work on

- Kraft Scrap Paper

First you will want to punch your circles from the scrap paper then stamp them with your chosen image(s). Using your Paper Distresser, go around the outer edges of the circles. Once that is done, use your chosen Distress Ink around the edges... I love how much this simple step adds to the visual interest of these flowers! Now go ahead and use your bone folder to work over the surface of the circles. (Do this step on the craft foam- it's the perfect surface for this affect). You will want to use some substantial pressure to start the "warping" process... the outer edges will start to curl up. (Just be careful not to apply too much pressure as it will destroy your paper). Once you have all of your circles warped to your liking, layer them in size order (smallest on top to largest on bottom). Use your paper piercer to go through all the layers in the center and then add your brad... DONE! And now you have some gorgeous grungy flowers to use for any of your paper crafting projects. The great thing about these is you can use stamps to change the theme of your flowers to fit any project you'd like! One last suggestion... if you want to make a lot of these at one time do each step on all the circles as you work rather than completing one flower at a time. It really cuts down on the amount of time you will spend on this project!

With Sympathy (A Card Share)

This past Friday the sweet lady who lived next door to us passed away. She always had a kind word for us and simply adored my daughters. She will truly be missed. I really wanted to create a card for her family that would really convey the beauty she brought to this world and the sadness of her being gone. Here is the finished card (the inside is also stamped with a sympathy sentiment)...

Stamp Storage Solution Video

The past couple weeks have found me going through a major revamping of my craft area. I decided it was high time I created a more efficient system for myself, get rid of stuff (trash) I would never really use (that means you, Mr. 5 Centimeter Scrap Paper) and make better use of the space I have to work with. There were only a few times I cringed (like when I removed my Tim Holtz stamp binders away from the rest of my TH supplies-- I know, it's a little silly), but it was all worth it in the end. Since rearranging my space I have been crafting more and using supplies I forgot I even owned! Finding a paper pad or stamp set you forgot you had is almost like Christmas all over again.

Anyway, the biggest part of this process for me was FINALLY doing something about my clear and cling rubber stamps. They were pretty much taking over my drawers and they just weren't being used because... well, I'm too lazy to go digging every time I want to make something. The solution I used was definitely not thought up by me, but I felt it was best for my needs. You can VIEW THE VIDEO HERE on youtube. DVD Gift Box Video Tutorial

I had so much fun making my video tutorial for Faux Wax Seals that I couldn't wait to do another one! I was inspired to create a tutorial for DVD sized gift boxes because members of my family usually have DVD's on their Christmas wish lists. I thought it would be nice to make my own boxes and then share the dimensions and steps with anyone else wanting to give it a try. You can watch the tutorial here, but before you do that here are the basic supplies you'll need:

2 pieces of cardstock cut to 7.5" x 9.75"
Martha Stewart Scoring Board
Adhesive

I also used my Tonic/Tim Holtz paper distresser and then of course whatever you want to use as your embellishments to make your box uniquely yours!

Here is a look at a couple of my finished boxes... I got to use my fabulous new La Blanche Santa stamps and some good ol' distress inks for these. I also added a dash of Glimmer Mists and Perfect Pearls Mists to finish them off.

I hope you enjoy the tutorial. Perhaps I should warn you- this tutorial runs close to 18 minutes long, but you can take what you want and leave the rest! Have a beautiful Christmas and a fantastic holiday!

Faux Wax Seals (My First Video Tutorial)

Hey everyone! Thanks for stopping in... I am super excited about what I have to share today because it's my first video tutorial ever! I was messing around last night, just having fun creating with no purpose, and I thought I'd go ahead and share a tutorial for what I came up with. Here's a little peek at what I made... faux wax seals!

Aren't they just so lovely? Yup! Here's a list of supplies you'll need for this technique:

Ultra Thick Embossing Enamel
Embossing Ink (I used my VersaMark pad, but any will do I'm sure).
Heat Tool
Craft Tweezers
Wax Seal or Rubber Stamp
One Inch Circle Punch
Scrap Paper
Non Stick Craft Sheet (I suppose this is optional, but it really makes a great work surface for this technique).

So there you have it... gather up the goods and join in the fun! Just a fair warning- these are super easy and super fun to make (and yes, super addictive)!

Christmas Card and Gift Box Sets

I've noticed that I'm often so focused on creating items for my online store or completing special orders for people I know that I don't always make time to actually make and give out my own handmade items to the people I am closest to. Can anyone else relate? Long story short, my oldest daughter attends preschool so I wanted to create something special to go with the gifts they are given. Basically, all the parents put in a certain amount of money and gift cards are purchased for each of the two teachers. I volunteered to make cards, but then I also got the idea to make coordinating gift boxes for the cards to be nestled in. Here's what I came up with...

This is a full view of one of the cards (both cards are essentially the same) with a handmade envelope...

Here is a close up of the Santa. I created this part of the card by stamping the Santa from the Tim Holtz Letters To Santa stamp set onto a cream cardstock. I then colored him in using various Distress Inks in Fired Brick, Peeled Paint, Antique Linen and Spun Sugar (for the rosy cheeks and nose). After die cutting with my Spellbinders oval Nestabilities die I used Old Paper and Vintage Photo Distress Inks around the edges of the image. I used the next size up oval die for the deep red paper beneath, adhering the Santa image with dimensional adhesives.

I used the script stamp from the same Letters To Santa set to add a very subtle detail to the green paper. The rhinestones on the bottom were originally clear-- I used Cranberry alcohol ink (from Ranger, Inc) to coordinate them with the deep red paper. I also distressed the edges of the card base, the green paper and the red oval. For the red and green papers I added Vintage Photo Distress Ink to the edges.

Here are the two boxes I created to coordinate with the cards. I created these using my Martha Stewart Scoring Board and 4 sheets of 8x8 paper. I distressed the box edges using my Tim Holtz Paper Distresser (by Tonic) and added some more of that good ol' Vintage Photo Distress Ink. To the tops of the boxes I added some lurvely rosettes which I made using my brand new (to me, that is... just got it this past week!) Tim Holtz Paper Rosette die. (Can you tell yet that I LOVE me some Tim Holtz)? I cut the green circles with my 1 1/4" circle punch and then added more alcohol inked rhinestones to the top.

To add a little something extra special, I used real vintage book pages for the inside of these boxes. (I really hope I don't offend the recipients... they are teachers after all). After tearing my pages out I used my Paper Crimper to add some texture and then an office supply paper shredder (it was in the basement when we moved in-- woo hoo!) to cut the pages.

So there you have it... I finally made something for someone I know! But seriously, I hope you've enjoyed looking at these and I also hope I wasn't too long winded in my explanations. My First Haul Video!

Ok, I will admit I am a bit of an online craft supply shopping addict (or really, just a craft supply addict in general). One of my go-to sites for papercrafting supplies is EllenHutson. They are great for all the things I can't get at JoAnn's online store. I have bought all my Stamper's Anonymous Tim Holtz stamp sets from them and a lot of other TH goodies (like his stamp binder for all my SA sets). I also have gotten different 7 Gypsies and Graphic 45 items just to name a couple of brands. Anyway, I went a little hog wild with their recent Black Friday sale. I decided to try making my first haul video and since it didn't turn out too horrible, I'm going to go ahead and share it! If you are anything like me, you get a vicarious thrill out of seeing other people's craft supply scores. I know... it's a sickness.

Where Have I Been This Time?

Ok, once again I have been MIC (missing in crafting). So what have I been up to this time? Preparing for my first craft show! It was my goal to be in at least one craft show this year so I jumped at the first one I saw calling for crafters. I then spent the next two and a half months preparing inventory for the event. I cranked out as many picture frames, journals, sketch books, magnets, holiday planners, mini wire bound notebooks and gift tags as I could and I have to admit-- I was rather pleased with myself! Soooo, the day of the craf tshow arrives and guess what! BLIZZARD CONDITIONS! Yes, about an hour into the start of the show it started coming down and after a few hours had gone by people just stopped showing up. It was a real bummer. I did however manage to make enough sales to go a little above the cost to be in the show so I felt satisfied with what I had accomplished. Now on to the fun part... pictures!

Here I am all super excited and proud of myself (and a little hyped up on one of those 5 hour energy drinks). You can see behind me the calm before the storm... (However, I loved that spot because it really was beautiful to watch the snow falling). I wanted to go for a vintage inspired set up and I really liked how it all turned out.

Next up is a view of my journal and sketchbook display. The books on top are actual vintage books I thought would look great as display props.

Here you can see my fall inspired frames. These are probably my favorite frames of all the ones I made simply because I find them so stunning and richly colored.

Next is a view of my vintage inspired frames and my bottlecap magnets (also vintage inspired). The night before the show I was freaking out about how to display my magnets and then I had this idea... to use this old wooden chessboard. People seemed to really like the idea!

Below are the baskets I used to display my gift tags, mini notebooks and holiday planners. You can also see a few Halloween themed frames behind them.

All in all I accomplished my goal and I was very proud of myself. I am looking forward to next year now that I won't have any fear of the unknown feeding on my creative energy. Oh, and next time... I will definitely be preparing more then two months in advance. *GRIN*

A Word About Customer Service

Aside from having great products, the most important aspect of any business is superb customer service. This is especially true of the small, independent arts/crafts based business. People want a personal experience and they want that experience to be a pleasant one! Nobody wants to feel ignored if they express a concern about a purchase. Nobody wants to feel ripped off by shipping prices. People know when they're being over charged. It's one thing to charge a little extra to cover shipping supplies and gas prices for the trip to the post office, but in my opinion, anything over a dollar above the shipping price is just taking advantage. One of my own shipping policies states that any difference of more than a dollar above the shipping cost will be refunded. As Always Angela believes in combining honest business practices with outstanding customer service. I also like to communicate with my customers... letting them know I've received their order and also keeping them updated on when I have shipped their order. People like to know what's going on! And in the spirit of great customer service, if their is ever an issue with anything someone purchases from me, I will do everything I can to make things right. I want to be someone people feel comfortable purchasing from-- not just once, but over and over again!

Now that I've shared some of my basic thoughts on customer service I want to give a mention to someone I recently dealt with who I think exemplifies fantastic customer service. When I recently decided to purchase my Zutter products I found this etsy shop and purchased the Bind It All and wire cutters. I then made another purchase of the DreamKuts, the Zutter Kutter and the Round It All. When my order arrived my Round It All was damaged and defective. I contacted the seller and she immediately set out to make things right. She had me send the item back, but she reimbursed me the shipping cost. When my new Round It All arrived she had included the little pouch for free! Also, the listing for the Bind It All said the Bind It All Around the World book would be included as a free gift, but it didn't come with my BIA. When I contacted her about this she apologised-- it had been an offer for the previous month and she had forgotten to take it out of her listing. However, she made good on the offer and sent it along with the new RIA. Let me tell you... it seemed like something was always happening, but every time an issue came up, she went out of her way to make things right! To me, that is customer service at its best. It would have been so easy to have a negative experience in this situation, but because the seller was always willing to make things right and was also always on top of communicating with me, I ended up having a pleasant experience and a very high opinion of her as a seller. Two For One Card Share

I couldn't even tell you how long it has been since I've made a card before a couple days ago! Thanks to a friends special request for some flower themed birthday cards I found myself happily creating these two lovelies...

For the first card my friend wanted me to make something with scenery and gardens for a friend who loves to garden, but currently lives somewhere which makes that impossible at the moment. The inspiration for this came immediately. I just recently learned how to make these fabulous little organza flowers so I thought they would make the perfect garden. The card base is from one of Tim Holtz's delicious paper stashes. I printed the sentiment out on translucent paper using my computer. I wanted something that would allow the beauty of the paper to come through while still allowing the organza flowers to be the center of attention.

For this next one, the only specification was that it be a flower themed birthday card. So of course I took the liberty to use one of my favorite techniques along with my favorite paper for this particular technique (basically any gorgeous, large print patterned paper by AC Paper)! I also only rounded two of the corners-- ones opposite each other to add visual interest. I saw this on a couple cards in PaperCrafts magazine and I thought it really added something special!

I just LURVE all the dimension you get from this technique...

Fun With My New Distrezz It All

Today has been a GREAT day! Why? Because this morning Mr. FedEx arrived with my recent amazon.com order which included my new Distrezz It All and my one inch Antique Brass owires. Fifteen minutes later Mr. UPS arrived with my recent joann.com order which was loaded with chipboard, 7 Gypsies book boards and some round paper punches (I wanted better nesting options for various projects)! So yes... a wonderful day indeed! And of course I was ready to get playing with my new "toy"... I had already cut my paper to the right size for my new book boards so I whipped out my new distrezzer and.... HOLY TOLEDO!! That thing has some serious kick! I about had a heart attack with the way that thing grabbed onto my first set of papers. After that though, it was super easy and I am soooooo, soooooo deeply in love with it!! So here's my first project utilizing the Distrezz It All, a long with the Bind It All and my new 7 Gypsies book boards... Enjoy!

I filled the book with 30 pages of Kraft card stock. Doesn't it just look so lush and wonderful?

I really love the character the Distrezz It All adds. It really pulls together the vintage inspired aesthetic. Plus, it distresses at a rapid speed. I couldn't believe how quickly I finished this project. So yeah... I am in love with Zutter products... the soul mate kind of love.

Where The Magic Happens...

I absolutely love taking a peek into other people's crafty spaces. Too fun! So now I'm going to give a little peek into my own... I have pretty much taken over most of part of one of our home's common rooms as the place for all my crafting-- where the magic happens! Lately the magic has been getting less magical as things have become cluttered and crowded. I recently went through all my lovely supplies (can you say hoarder!?) and put things I no longer needed or wanted into a yard sale. Luckily, pretty much all of it sold right away! I decided to use my earnings on a couple new crafting items...the Zutter Kutter, the DreamKuts, and the Distrezz It All. Soooo... of course with all of these magnificent items on the way I REALLY needed to do some cleaning and de-cluttering. I decided to go ahead and get that done tonight since my orders should be rolling in sometime next week!

So here's the before...

My lovely work surface... (If you look closely you can see my new paper trimmer! I decided to upgrade now that I'm going to be making a lot of books and journals. I wanted to be able to cut at least 6 inches without having to pull out the measurement arm).

This is where my photographic magic happens... in my little home made light box! This is an entertainment center I have completely re-purposed for my craft storage needs.

Have Bind-It-All... Will Create!

I finally received my Bind It All order in the mail! (I hate waiting for online orders... bleh). It came yesterday and I was so excited to rip into, but once I had it open I sort of had a creative freeze. For the past couple of weeks all I've been able to do is think of ALLLL the amazing things I would make with my BIA, but there it was- right in my hands- and I was terrified! All I could think of was messing up everything I tried to make. My BIA sat on my work surface all day long... garnering passing glances from me. I felt we were sort of sizing eachother up. By the time my evening freedom (known as putting the kids to bed) rolled around I was ready to give show my BIA who's boss. So here it is... my very first BIA project! And wonder of all wonders... I didn't mess up a single time! Perhaps it was a case of beginners luck, but I'm not here to split hairs.

I created this to be an Envelope Ephemera Book (for holding ephemera and various paper bits) for someone on swapbot who is currently organzing her craft space. The cover image is what I am most proud of because she likes images of animals holding umbrellas and I had this from a card I had received and just cut off the front to use on something in the future. I knew it would be perfect for her!

The only thing I wasn't 100% pleased with was my binding job... it was just ever-so-slightly wonky. I'm sure it's just a matter of practicing!

I placed a total of 6 envelopes inside. I figured that would be enough space for breaking down ephemera into cattegories if she wants.

So there you have it! I don't mean to toot my own horn (ok, yes I do...), but I'm really happy with how it turned out. I hope it will make the recipient very happy!

Where, Oh Where Have I Been?

I've been a little MIA lately... not just on my blog, but my etsy shop as well. So where have I been and what have I been up to? Well, I've been down the crafting rabbit hole. Let me explain... I am part of an online community called Swap Bot. This is a forum for joining in on public or private swaps with people from all over the world (or just your own region if you prefer) for almost ANYTHING your heart desires to swap. A few months ago an incredible group was started called the Tim Holtz Addicts group which I was invited to become a member of and was then made an officer. I was in craft heaven! As a lover of the Tim Holtz aesthetic I had finally found my "home" and proceeded to host and join in on many swaps. Since then most of my crafting time has been consumed with creating items for these swaps. I am also now a co-founder of the group which has been great! Needless to say my etsy shop and my blog naturally fell to the way-side. Hopefully I will be able to get back into the swing of things. As a start, let me share some of the things I have made in the past couple months for various swaps. And believe me, this is just a very small sampling. Ok, enough of my chit chat (or should I call it "type tap"?).

This is a charm bracelet I created for a swap I hosted. It now has a loving home in Switzerland!
These guys are images from the Tim Holtz Steampunk stamp set from Stampers Anonymous. I used them to create these little bottle cap magnets.

And here they are again (can you tell I love this stamp?)! These were made for a Tim Holtz Fragments swap.

This tag is made from all recycled materials and the use of Distress Inks and alcohol inks (both from Ranger). The wing of the bird moves!

Here is my second matchbox (which is also now in Switzerland with the same proud owner of the charm bracelet). I had sooo much fun making this and finding all the tiny elements for the inside. These are addictive to make!

Less Is More Challenge Week 9: A Touch of Red (Color Challenge)

I was so happy when I saw this weeks Less Is More challenge! This week we have been presented with a color challenge: A Touch of Red. I immediately knew what I was going to do and proceeded to complete this card in about five minutes. I LOVE it when that happens... when inspiration hits and everything you pictured in your head comes together even more beautifully than you had imagined! So here it is...

I was thrilled to finally use a technique I saw a long time ago in a magazine... one where you cut out parts of the same image and then adhere them together using dimensional adhesives. The article I read used stamps, but I chose to use this gorgeous flower from a piece of AC Patterned Paper (the a la Carte stack). I simply cut out one entire flower then cut out half of another one just like it. They are stacked with dimensional adhesives between them. I am also happy because I got to use one of my new Hero Arts sets for the sentiment (the Made With Love set-CL491). This has got to be one of my favorite submissions so far!

Variations On A Theme

Lately I have been working on creating a bunch of butterfly themed cards for a women's group I am part of. Our little "motto" is "Find your wings and keep them." These cards are going to be used for each woman to send a note of encouragement to someone they think needs to be uplifted throughout the week. Here are a few of the cards I finished today using some of the Copic colored butterflies I shared with you yesterday... This first card was created using the Divine Swirls embossing folder from Cuttlebug. I dotted each swirl tip with white gel pen. I also used the white gel pen for accenting the butterflies and hand writing the sentiment.

The following card was also created using the Divine Swirls embossing folder. The ends of these swirls were also dotted using a white gel pen. The butterflies were accented using Lavender Stickles (this was my first time trying Stickles... let's just say I'm in LOVE). The sentiment is hand written in white gel pen.

This next card was created using the Stylized Flowers embossing folder from Cuttlebug and sanding the raised parts. The butterflies were accented with Liquid Pearls in Rouge.

All butterflies are from the Antique Engravings set from Hero Arts (CL383) and are colored using Copic markers (for information on exact markers used, please visit yesterday's post. Thanks for letting me share!

Butterflies, Copics and Scissors... Oh, My! (Again)

This is something I like to do when I'm doing craft time with my precious little 2 1/2 year old daughter... I stamp a bunch of images and then color them with Copics while she paints. Not only is it fun and relaxing, it's also a great way to prep a lot of images for future use. I just got this great stamp set with my Hero Arts order a couple days ago. It's called Antique Engravings (CL383) and I LOVE it! These butterflies are so great. The inspiration for these came from this youtube video by Jennifer McGuire. Here they are all cut out... I just love how vivid they are! Here are the Copic colors I used:

Purple butterfly: V12, V15

Gray butterfly: W-3, B63

Red butterfly: R22, R35

Yellow butterfly:Y17, YR68

Butterfly body: E57

And here is a card I created this evening using one of the gray butterflies...

I embossed a lovely gray textured card stock from my Neutrals Mat Stack (DCWV) with the Divine Swirls embossing folder from Cuttlebug. I then used sand paper to distress the raised areas of the embossed paper. I heat embossed the butterfly with three layers of Clear Ultra Thick Embossing Enamel (and VersaMark) to create a gorgeous glossy butterfly! Before the butterfly cooled too much I bent the wings up slightly to give a nice dimensional affect.

Goodies Galore!

Today was a GREAT day for crafting goodies! I found this cute little scrapbooking store in my area that carries a lot of great stuff that the large chains don't. I've pretty much tapped out the large chains so I'm trying to find smaller, locally owned stores that carry the more unique items that you can usually only find online. Anyway, after I got home, the mailman brought me my most recent joann order. Woo hoo!! Here's what I got- a lot of stuff I can't wait to play around with! I am so excited about giving these dies a try. They have so much potential- so many uses! I also got some more grungeboard which will be great to use with my new dies! (Tim Holtz Alterations Sizzix dies: Hanging Sign and Hardware Findings). Also, as you can see in the photo above I got the larger size Craft Sheet. I already have the smaller size, but I decided it was time to upgrade to a larger surface. Next I ordered some more Distress Inks! I've pretty much been using the same ones for everything and I felt it was time to branch out with the colors to get a refreshed feel to my work. Only one issue came up with this order and that is I was supposed to get Victorian Velvet, but I received Stormy Sky instead. I won't complain because I did want to add that color to my collection too, but it's never cool when your order is messed up. I'll just have to grab Victorian Velvet next time. Anyway, the colors I got are (not listed in order of the picture): Mustard Seed, Faded Jean, Bundled Sage, Chipped Sapphire, Crushed Olive, Spun Sugar and Stormy Sky.

Here's something else I've been super excited to get... Perfect Pearls Mists! I saw Tim demonstrate this new product on the HSN and I was instantly enthralled. I ordered (from right to left): Forever Red, Perfect Pearl, Forever Violet, Turquoise and Heirloom Gold. There are a total of 12 Perfect Pearls Mist colors so far, but I figured these would be a good place for me to start. I also ordered a Paint Dabber in Snow Cap. I've never used one before, but I wanted to at least give it a try before deciding I didn't like it. I joined a Paint Dabber resist technique swap which gave me the perfect excuse to give it a go!

Next up are the goodies I purchased from Joys Of Life Scrapbooking. I got a couple Hero Arts clear stamp sets (Dictionary Greetings- CL479 and Made With Love- CL491), some gorgeous gray ribbon for a card project I am working on, my first Stickles (in Lavender), a couple of Liquid Pearls (in Lavender Lace and Rouge) and this really cool chipboard book from Maya Road.

On top of all that I also got to go thrift shopping today and found some AWESOME things for altering and some great things for organizing some of my supplies. See... I told you it was a GREAT day for crafting goodies!

Less Is More Challenge Week 8: Sketch

Time for a favorite part of my week... the Less Is More blog challenge! This weeks challenge is a "Sketch" which is a first for me. (It's also my first DL card, which I don't even know what DL means). I've never attempted a sketch challenge before, but I love the concept! Here is a peek at this weeks sketch... In all honesty, I underestimated the difficulty. I started brainstorming as soon as I saw the sketch and came up with a concept in my head. Well, about five failed attempts later I realized it just wasn't going to happen. I gave myself a day long break to give my creative energies a little rest. Nothing was coming to me until this morning when I received my recent Hero Arts purchases in the mail. As soon as I opened my box of goodies inspiration came over me. This card is a little bitter-sweet for me... sweet because I love how it turned out and I love that I got to use some of my new stamps. Bitter because it is a card I created with a purpose- a friend of my family just lost her father. So, here is the final result...

The petal is adhered with dimensional adhesives so it stands slightly above the card. Also, I got to try some creative problem solving... I wanted to emboss the one side of my paper, but it wouldn't fit properly into my Sizzix because of the paper size. I positioned my folder where I wanted it then placed my paper on a couple sheets of felt. Using a bone folder I went over the embossing folder, pushing down as hard as I could. Voila! It created the embossed effect where I needed it!

Thanks for letting me share! I know I took a few creative liberties... turning the design on its side and using the flower as my "circle." However, I love how it turned out and I still think it follows the sketch guidelines! Let's hope Chrissie and Mandi agree!

Less Is More Challenge Week 7: Masculine Revisited

This weeks challenge over at Less Is More is the (somewhat dreaded) masculine card. I did make a submission earlier in the week and wasn't planning on submitting another. However, I recently ordered a little gift for my husband and it came in the mail today. I wanted to make a card that would double as a gift tag. Of course, just like earlier this week, I headed straight for my collection of Tim Holtz stamps. I also grabbed up my "Peeled Paint" Distress Ink as green is my husbands favorite color. Here is the final result...

The stars are from his Visual Artistry clear stamp set "City Central" and the lion is from the VA clear stamp set "Regal Flourish". I also used black Archival Ink.

I really like how it turned out and my husband loved his gift so I guess everybody wins!

How Do I Love Thee? Let Me Count The Ways

A few months ago my creative life was changed forever when I happened to stumble across a YouTube video tutorial featuring someone named Tim Holtz demonstrating a product called Distress Ink. Life. Changing. I went about purchasing some Distress Inks and falling in love with them instantly. Little did I know that was only the tip of the Tim Holtz iceberg! Today I am well aware of his many amazing products... from the "Alterations" line to the "Idea-ology" line and all the glorious products in-between (Stamper's Anonymous, Ranger, Tonic, etc... Tim Holtz is a brand). This morning I received a shipment from JOANN's online store loaded with products from his idea-ology line that I am super excited to dig into and "get grungy" with, but of course I had to take time to share my new goodies with all of you!

Adventures (I Am Trying To Have) In... Scrapbooking!

Ok... if you know me, you know I am crazy passionate about card making and paper crafting (tags, gift boxes, ATC's, altered items, etc...). There's no doubt about it, it's just part of who I am. However, what you may not know is that I am super terrified of scrapbooking! Yes, I know... it probably sounds silly, but I just have this huge creative block when it comes to scrapbooking. I used to be able to trace it back to my fear of cutting up my photographs. See, back when this was all new to me I had this assumption that in order to scrapbook I would have to cut all of my photographs into crazy shapes or something which made me feel like I might cut out something important. I have recently learned this is not the case at all! I have been checking out a lot of scrapbooking related magazines, books, websites, etc. lately and most of what I've seen is photographs in their original shape and size or at least very close to it. I have always wanted to scrapbook and now that I don't feel terrified of having to chop up all my precious memories I have decided to give it a try!

I recently purchased the book Scrapbooking Made Easy by Simple Scrapbooks and Leisure Arts (which I believe is a magazine publication). The very first chapter covered all my fears! I felt it was a paper crafting sign. I've dug out my daughter's first birthday photos, selected the ones I want to scrap and am ready to get started! (Oh... I already had the scrapbook. I bought it about 8 months ago with this exact purpose in mind. See... I told you I have a creative block for scrapbooking)! So yes... album (check), photos (check), can-do spirit (check)! Wish me luck!

Less Is More Challenge Week 7: Masculine

Ah yes... the ever elusive masculine card. That's this weeks challenge over at the wonderfully fun Less Is More Challenge Blog. I will admit I hardly ever make masculine cards. It's a little hard to admit when you're not good at something and the design and execution of masculine cards is definitely an area I could greatly improve upon. Luckily, I just received a massive ebay haul of Tim Holtz stamps I won so when I read this weeks challenge I knew exactly where to go for inspiration...

I created this first card using "The Journey" set for the vehicle and the "Playful Journey" set for the sentiment. I think it turned out to be a nice "all occasion" type of card or even a nice and simple graduation card.

The next card I created is my favorite of the two. I love this little bicycle stamp from the "Playful Journey" set, but I wanted to do something a little different for the paper. I decided to use a gold metallic finish paper as my card base. I was a little worried it might not turn out masculine enough, but because it is metallic and not sparkly it is actually quite masculine. I think the paper really takes this card up a notch. In fact, I think I am going to turn this concept into a notecard set to list in my shop. I'm glad I gave it a shot even though I was hesitant!

Less Is More Challenge Week 6: One Layer Card- "Off The Edge"

This weeks challenge over at the Less Is More challenge blog is "One Layer Card- Off The Edge." The guidelines are simple... create a card by stamping directly on the base- no layers or embellishments- and your image must go off the edge of your base. The following card is actually the second one I created. I used the peacock from the Fiskars "Plumage" clear stamp set and created the look by stamping the image twice- once in slate blue and once in purple. I did the same with the sentiment (Hero Arts). I then did some outlines of the feathers and also the sentiment with a gold gel pen (which is a very subtle accent). I felt the two colors on top of each other would create some visually interesting depth.

This next card is my Honorable Mention. It's actually the first one I created for the challenge. It also happens to be my favorite of the two. The reason I am not officially submitting it is I felt perhaps there was not enough "negative space" for this particular blog. Part of the reason is because I used a smaller card base than usual. I love how it turned out though! I created this card by using my new Hero Arts Flower Burst background stamp inked with white chalk ink. This was the first time I used this stamp so I was pretty happy for the excuse to give it a try. The sentiment is the same as on the card above (also Hero Arts). I added some touches of silver with a gel pen (if I make it again I don't think I will do the silver) and I finished the card off with a spritz of Tsukineko's Shimmer Mist. It's not visible in the photograph, but it is such a lovely touch!

I am especially excited to use my paper distresser because I have been doing a lot of Tim Holtz inspired paper projects lately (tags, ATC's, inchies, etc...). I think this distresser will add a great touch to my finished items (which I will gladly share with you here). I have also been heat embossing a lot lately (using clear Ultra Thick Embossing Enamel) which is why I got the reverse action tweezers- to hold whatever I am embossing at the moment. I am so excited that a product like the Stamp-A-Ma-Jig exists because rubber stamps have always intimidated me simply for the fact you can't see exactly how the image is going to line up on your surface. With this tool, it takes all the guess work out of it and provides for accuracy when stamping! As for the other items... well, how cute are those House Mouse stamps!? Looking forward to making some great spring and summer cards with them. I love the look the swiss dot embossing folder provides... especially as a background. It really adds a luxurious feel to cards. The smaller stamps are just some sute ones I added on last minute to come out to the minimum required to use my free shipping coupon, but I look forward to using them as well- especially the adorable "fun-gi" one!

Dollar Deal Delights Part 3

Today's precious little dollar deal card is very simple, but also very striking! Supplies:

flower stamp (was originally a dollar, but got it on clearance for 50 cents!)
Memento Ink in Tuxedo Black
cheapo ribbon: pink and black
Nestabilities Sets: Petite Ovals Large and Petite Scallop Ovals Large
sentiment stamp: Hero Arts
LePlume Markers
scrap card stock

I created this card by first stamping and coloring my image on scrap white card stock. I die cut this using one of the oval dies. Using the next size up in the scallop set, I die cut a piece of scrap black card stock. On the card base I adhered a length of pink ribbon then layered the thinner black ribbon on top (I thought it gave it more visual interest rather than just plain pink or black). The scallop and image were adhered together with dimensional adhesives then adhered over the ribbon with dimensional adhesives as well (these dimensional adhesives aren't very thick so the affect is subtle, but lovely). Lastly, I stamped the sentiment a long the bottom and rounded the corners.

And there it is... the perfect card to brighten a friends day!

Dollar Deal Delights Part 2/ Less Is More Challenge Week 5

Today's card is a two-birds-one-stone kind of card. Not only does it cover my personal challenge to make a series of cards using mostly items that cost a dollar (or less!), but it also covers this weeks Less Is More blog challenge which is "Pastel Colours". This card was created using three g studio stamps (sentiment, ice cream cone and dot background) and pink g studio chalk ink. The ribbon is from one of those cheapo spools that usually cost 50 cents, but I only buy it when it is on sale 3/$1.00 and in some cases 4/$1.00. Bonus: the pink card stock used behind the ice cream cones are scraps from yesterdays project! Also used: Copic markers, textured card stock, ivory card base, dimensional adhesives, corner rounder.

I first stamped the ice cream cones onto Neenah card stock and colored using Copic markers (R20, R22, R35, E33 and E57). I stamped the dot background onto pink card stock rectangles and rounded the corners. I adhered three strips of ribbon, applied the dotted rectangles and adhered the ice cream cones using dimensional adhesives. The sentiment is stamped using the same pink chalk ink as the dots.

and one of the sentiment. I love how the textured card stock breaks up the ink a bit.

Dollar Deal Delights Part 1

We've all seen these items in our local craft supply stores... the nifty little one dollar paper crafting items. These items range from clear and rubber stamps to rhinestones, glitter and flocking. You most likely own one or two of these items yourself (if not, what are you waiting for?), but if you're anything like me you own A LOT of these items. I usually can't resist picking up one or two of the dollar crafting items, but after I buy them I tend to shove them in a drawer and completely forget about them. I tend to use my more expensive items- probably because I did spend more money on them. (Maybe it's my way of justifying purchasing them). So I came up with a self-imposed challenge... to create a series of cards using these lovely little dollar items! I'll be sharing these cards-and the dollar items I used to make them- here with all of you. Hopefully it will inspire you to go ahead and dig out all your own little dollar goodies and give 'em a go!

For todays card I used the following items: three different g studio stamps (two background and one sentiment), two varying shades of pink chalk ink by g studio, half pearls and some scrap ribbon which was part of some packaging of something I purchased at some point in time (woo hoo- free!). Other elements include my card base, pink card stock and two different sizes of Fiskars Petals punches.

So here it is! I used the background stamps on two different shades of pink card stock and used the petals punches to cut them out. I alternated the circles and dots in the three layers (I also alternated the dark and light pink paper). I placed half pearls in the centers of each flower. The top flower is adhered to the card using dimensional adhesive so it stands slightly higher than the bottom flower.

I turned the center petals up a bit to add some dimension to the flowers and to showcase the alternation between circles and dots in the different levels.

I am already working on the design concept for my next card. Can't wait to share it with you!

I also got the Sizzix Bigz XL A2 Envelope Die #2, but it is being returned. There wasn't anything wrong with it- it just wasn't what I had expected as far as design/assembly of the envelope. Now onto what I've made so far with my new goodies (because if you use it, even just once, then it means you really did need it)!

This card was created by stamping the Poppies image onto Neenah card stock then coloring the image using my Copic markers in R14, YR18, YR68 and G05. I die cut the image (and the green card stock) using the Labels Eleven dies. The sentiment is by Hero Arts. There are dimensional adhesives between the stamped image and the green card stock. What I love about this stamp so much is it is so easy and fun to color, but it is so strikingly beautiful!

The next card was created pretty much the same way- by stamping the image separately and coloring with Copics. The colors I used for this great stamp are:

Flower: Y11, Y15, Y11
Stem and Leaves: G03, Y11
Rain: BG10
Grass: YG06, G05
Mouse: E00, E21, E33, E57 and R20 for the nose

The sentiment is also from Hero Arts. It originally says "sending you sunshine and laughter," but I thought leaving it at "sending you sunshine" fit this card much better. Even though the image was stamped on white card stock, I used Antique Linen Distress Ink and the foam blending tool from Ranger to add the subtle background color. Also, the image was die cut using the largest die in the Labels Eleven set so I just adhered it to the green card stock and cut around it. There are dimensional adhesives between the green card stock and the card base.

Here is more of a close up. I just love how it turned out!

Less Is More Week 4 Challenge Version 2.0

Ok... so I received a comment from one of the kind and lovely creators of the Less Is More challenge blog making me aware that, because I had previously posted the "Thinking Of You" butterfly card on my blog, it technically wasn't a valid submission. (I apologize... now I'll know for next time)! So, in the spirit of it all, I felt challenged to make a new submission (and isn't that really the whole point after all)! I had a lot of fun with this one because I got to try out a new technique and even had a couple "happy accidents" a long the way!

The squares were created by using a resist technique. I first stamped my flourish (Tim Holtz Visual Artistry Flights of Fancy clear stamp set) using VersaMark ink. I then did one coat of Ultra Thick Embossing Enamel to create the resist. The color was added using Ranger Distress Ink in the colors "Peeled Paint" and "Dusty Concord." The sentiment (also from the Flights of Fancy set) was stamped in the same "Dusty Concord" color.

I am really pleased with how this turned out. It is probably the most "negative space" I have ever left on a card too, but I think it works really well. I am definitely itching to try this resist technique some more!

Less Is More Week 4 Challenge

This is my first ever blog challenge submission. This challenge comes from a great blog called Less Is More which encourages the creation of simplistic yet beautiful cards through minimal embellishing and layering. This weeks challenge is "Three Squares." I know I previously posted this card mixed in with some others, but I thought it was perfect for this challenge so I will be submitting it from this post by itself.

Who's Having A Birthday?

This past weekend my two year old daughter was invited to a birthday party for a little girl she sometimes plays with. The night before the party I realized, "Duh! Make her a card!" So I sat down and came up with this precious little number. I stamped the owl and balloon on a separate sheet of card stock (Neenah), colored them with Copics, cut them out and adhered them to the purple paper. (I apologize for not being able to give you the name of the stamp set- I unfortunately wasn't keeping track of that information before starting this blog and the original packaging is long gone). The stump (Hero Arts), sentiment and party hat (both from the same set as the owl and balloon) were stamped directly onto the purple card stock. I hand wrote "I Hope It's A Hoot!" on the inside using a black size 03 Pigma Micron Pen. So cute and just perfect for a little girl (or boy if you change up the colors)!

By the way, if anyone knows what the owl stamp set is called or who it was put out by, I would really appreciate the information. Thanks!

Today I had a realization... I love making cards and usually make at least one a day, if not more. However, I hardly ever make tags! In fact, the only tags I have ever made were completely one dimensional- just stamped and given a "vintage" look by using distress inks. I think my problem lies in my misconceptions about tags. They don't have to be simple and they don't have to be flat. In fact, since they aren't going into an envelope, they can pretty much have as many layers and embellishments as I want! I decided it was time to change my thinking and get over whatever was holding me back from making tags. My plan? To think of tags as miniature versions of cards. Once I put my mind on that track, my hands did the rest! Here's the tag I made tonight...

Butterflies, Copics and Scissors... Oh, My!

So as you can probably tell from my previous posts on the subject, I am totally loving my new Copic markers! I am very new at using them, but I have been having so much fun getting to know them. Practice makes perfect, right? Because Copics bleed through paper (unless you use Gina K's Pure Luxury card stock which you can find at Gina K Designs) I have been stamping mass amounts of images on my paper (Neenah card stock which can be found at Ellen Hutson), coloring them with Copics all at once, and then cutting them out for use on cards, tags, etc.

Two days ago I purchased the clear butterfly stamp set from Martha Stewart. I am in love with this set! Here's a little look at what I've done so far...

Aren't they just so vibrant?! I'm not quite sure what I'll be using them for yet, but I know I'll find something spectacular to do with them! And because I believe in giving credit where credit is due, my method of coloring these little beauties was inspired by Jennifer McGuire who has this awesome blog you can check out at Jennifer McGuire, ink..

Let There Be Light!

I was recently inspired by a LIVE Etsy Symposium to do everything in my power to have a successful shop. One of the biggest parts of success on Etsy is to have spectacular photographs of your products. I had been taking my photos in my attic in an area I had set up to take photos to the best of my ability, but it really just wasn't good enough. Not only was it hard to photograph certain colors, but it was also very inconvenient to have to run up to the attic every time I needed to photograph a product. My finished items would pile up until I could finally get around to getting it done. That meant less listings to my Etsy shop.

I finally decided I needed to do something about this problem. I searched "How To Make A Light Box" and came up with some great tutorials which all pretty much gave the same directions. I'll share my process with you here...

SUPPLIES

cardboard box (large enough for whatever you are photographing... mine measures 14x14x16 inches)
white tissue paper
at least 2 lamps with bulbs (get bulbs that are crisp white light... not the basic bulbs that give off a yellow tint
tape (I used painters tape)
box cutter
ruler
black or white poster board (I got both to use depending on the color of what I am photographing)

First, assemble the box by taping the bottom. Cut off the remaining flaps (that would normally be used to secure the top). Measure 2 inches in from the sides for the top of your box and 2 of the sides. Draw lines to connect these measurements and cut out the centers with your box cutter.

Cut a long these lines with your box cutter to create 3 square openings- one in the top and 2 on the sides.

Cut the poster board to the width of the box and mount it inside. It should curve down and out- not be made to fit in the bottom back corner of the box. This creates the seamless effect of the background in your photos.

Layer 1-2 sheets of tissue paper over each opening (or however many you need to create the desired lighting effect). Position a lamp on each side (I use desk lamps with positionable necks). I only have lamps on the two sides which has worked fine for me, but you could also position a lamp to shine through the top if you fend that works best for you.

Voila! You are ready to take magnificent photographs! You may still need to do a little light balance editing in photo shop, but you will be amazed at the quality of your photos. Things I was never able to photograph well before turn out spectacularly!

My Workbox In All Its Glory...AKA Probably The Worst Videos Ever

So here it is, as promised, video of my assembled Workbox and all the goodies now calling it home! These are the first videos I have ever made so please forgive me for the crappiest camera work you will ever see. They are titled Part 3 and Part 4 because Part 1 is the Workbox being delivered (taken off the truck) and Part 2 is the Workbox assembled, but not filled.

I hope you've enjoyed checking out the Workbox and all my goodies! (The company did send the shelves that were missing so it is now complete). I have been so productive since having the Workbox. I'm actually able to create what I want when I want because I am no longer worried about fumbling around for all my supplies or having to dig things out just to have to put them back in some corner in a box again five minutes later. My Week In Cards

My sister-in-law recently found out she's expecting her first child. Of course I wanted to congratulate her (and let her know I can't wait to see someone other than myself pregnant)! I created this sweet and simple card using this cute little stamp (I bought it awhile ago and had never used it), Copic markers (E00, B29, R29, BG10), some blue textured card stock and 3 red brads. The stamped image was cut out and then adhered using dimensional adhesives.

The following card was created as a nice way to send out one of my recent Ultimate Year of Happy Mail swaps (on http://www.swap-bot.com/). I didn't want to send just a sheet of paper with my list on it so I decided to make something nice and fun to brighten my partners day. This card was created using a hedgehog stamp, 2 inch circle punch, 3 inch scallop punch, kraft paper and designer card stock (K&Company). The image was colored using Copic markers (E21, E33, E57 and G07 as the background).

Happy Accidents

While the words "happy" and "accident" don't often go together, when it comes to crafting these are two of my favorite words to combine. To me a "happy accident" is when you make a mistake or do something unintentional which results in a wonderful and unexpected outcome.

Here is a recent example of one of my favorite "happy accidents." I had been meaning to create an entire card of peacock feathers, but the background stamp I was using failed to leave an impression near the middle of the card. For a brief moment I was bummed to have to start over, but then I saw an even better opportunity present itself to me. I was able to use the empty space for an actual peacock and the over-all affect came out far better than my original idea.

So basically what I'm saying is don't be afraid to make mistakes! Mistakes are often success in disguise and it is in our greatest mistakes that we often find our greatest work.

Copic (Like Toe Pick)!

It is around 3:20 in the lovely a.m. and I am (semi) wide awake. Mostly because my precious 5 month old had a bit of gas, but partly because I have a new purchase to be excited about. I ordered my first Copics yesterday! And as the title suggests, it's pronounced with a long o.... like toe pick! (Please tell me someone else has seen the original Cutting Edge). I'm not a snob though... I won't fault you for saying it wrong because before I watched a ton of youtube videos and read various tutorials on them I pronounced it incorrectly myself!

Sooo... yes. I have about 16 Copics coming my way. I ordered them from this fabulous website which offers them at an AMAZING discount! Check them out at http://www.oozak.com/. This website offers free shipping on orders of 50 dollars or more so I ordered enough markers to put me at that point. They also ship out the same day if your order is received by 3:30 pm (Eastern time) which is great if you're like me- super impatient! Yup... I want what I want when I want it. (Oh, you know you do too)! Anyway, I decided to start out with the Ciao series. I did this for a few reasons...

They are cheaper! I was able to start out with a wider range of colors and still stay in the 50 dollar range.
The tips are the same as the Sketch series.
Even though there is less ink in the Ciao markers, if I do end up using them a lot I can always buy the ink refills which will refill a Ciao about 13 times. These refills are fairly inexpensive.
If I decide I want more colors than the Ciao series offers (right now they offer 180 colors with more expected in March) I can always get what I want from the Sketch series (which has 346 color choices at the moment).

The point is, I'm not locked down to the Ciao markers. They're just a starting point. It's all about preference. I'm sure if I enjoy working with Copics I will eventually add Sketch markers to my collection.

Some other things I learned... the PAPER you use is important! I ordered Neenah Classic Solar White cardstock because it seemed to be the most recommended at the best price. I ordered that here http://www.ellenhutson.com/servlet/the-1368/Neenah%2C-Classic-Crest%2C-Solar/Detail?affiliate_no=01. It's a lot of paper! I just can't pass up a good deal when I see one though and it was the biggest bang for my buck. The other paper names that came up the most for stampers wanting to use copics was Gina K Pure Luxury Card Stock which can be found here http://www.shop.ginakdesigns.com/product.sc?productId=278 and Papertrey Ink's Stamper's Select White Card Stock which is here http://www.papertreyink.com/pb_paper.html. They offer 40 sheets of 8.5"x11" for 6 dollars where Gina K's paper is 25 sheets (not sure what the size is) for $6.95. It's really all going to come down to two factors... which do you prefer and which can you afford. If you're able to experiment with more than one go for it! Let me know what you think! I'll be sure to share my findings as well.

The next important thing is INK! The general consensus seems to be to use Tsukineko's Memento Ink (try Tuxedo Black). Apparently this ink will not bleed or ruin your Copic nibs. You also don't have to heat set it before coloring your images! (I'm too lazy for that nonsense anyway). It is also the general consensus that you should NOT use inks like Staz-On (which is also from Tsukineko). This ink will ruin your Copic nibs!

Well, for anyone thinking about trying Copics I hope this was a little helpful. Obviously I am NOT an expert as I have still never even held a Copic marker in my hands. I just thought I would share with you what I found through my own research... sort of a condensed version. I figure it's easier than having to dig through all the Copic muck yourself. I will be sure to share my personal experiences with you in the future! If you have any input or questions please be sure to leave a comment!

When Creativity Met Lack of Inspiration (This Is Not A Love Story)

There are times when I will want to create, but it isn't clear what to create. We've all been there- the place where creativity meets up with lack of inspiration and decides to hang out awhile. Your fingers are raring to go, but the mind is seemingly blank. We all have our own ways of dealing with our creative blahs- the things that work best for us. Or maybe you haven't found what works best for you yet (don't worry, you will). Next time you're looking for inspiration give this a try- LOOK. Look through your papers... the different colors, textures and designs. Peruse through your collection of stamps, even the ones you don't seem to use all that often. Dig through your many embellishments... searching for something that might catch your eye. Your supplies trust you to turn them into something amazing. Maybe you should trust them to get you there.

For me, all it usually takes is one tiny moment, one piece of paper or stamp that grabs me, and the rest just comes rushing in. The layout, the embellishments, the color scheme. Sometimes it happens so fast I have to write or sketch it out before I forget. So give it a try- there really isn't anything to lose from trying (and you may even find some great supplies you forgot you had!). Does it work every time? No. It does however work most of the time. And if it's not working it's usually a sign that I am just creatively burned out. When that happens I treat myself to a little creative R&R. Yes, even creativity needs a nap now and then (especially after hanging out with lack of inspiration).

Oh Workbox, How I Love Thee

So here it is! After about 5 hours of assembling the basic structure (thanks to my husband and brother) I then had to add the little shelf holder thing-a-ma-jiggers, shelves and totes (which were all included). Wednesday was spent transfering all of my supplies into every available space inside the Workbox. It is even more amazing than I thought it would be! There is so much space and it has features I wasn't even aware of like removable dividers for the smallest totes which are perfect for separating embellishments (really handy with all my different colors of paper flowers). This is a wide view of the entire unit.

This is a view of the left side of the unit. You can see it also comes with these great plastic bags that velcro to the walls.

So there it is, folks. My really awesome Workbox and my not so awesome photography skills! I'm currently working on editing some video footage of the delivery and set-up and of course of all the goodies I put inside. Just a warning...film maker I am not!

Momma's Got A Brand New Workbox

My heart goes out to all the crafters who have to use every last crevice and corner for their supplies... the crafters who have to pull out their projects on any random available surface only to have to stuff them away again so that said random surface can be used for its intended purpose (dinner, anyone?)... the crafters who's husbands are at their wits end from seeing craft supplies in every room... Yes, my heart goes out to you, for I too am one of those crafters. But no more!

On January 9th I took the plunge and ordered The Original Scrapbox Workbox from paperwishes.com. The first time I came across this I was immediately smitten. Who in their right mind wouldn't be? It was perfect... the answer to all my crafting problems- the culmination of all my crafting dreams. Of course it comes with a pretty hefty price tag too so I knew I would have to wait. So now, all these months later, the wait is over! I was told it would take two weeks for my Workbox to arrive and it did- exactly two weeks. My Workbox arrived today, January 24th, via FedEx freight in all its 350 lb, 5 box glory. It is currently sitting on my living room floor as my husband is not able to assemble it until tomorrow after work. For those of you wondering... yes, it's killing me. (At least my 2 1/2 year old had fun using the boxes as launch pads... see, silver lining).

So here's goodbye to my crafting supplies being scattered to the ends of the earth... Momma's got a brand new Workbox and her supplies have a brand new home!

Cupcake ATC Swap- US only

My very first ATC's! I used permanent marker pen and watercolors as my medium. The theme we had to use was "cupcakes". I absolutely love how they turned out! I'm really going to miss them when they're gone.

Back To My First Love

I must say April was definitely the month for me! I started listing items for sale on Etsy in January and felt like I was beating my head against the proverbial wall with absolutely no sales for three months. When I first started listing on Etsy I started out by listing crocheted items- baby blankets, dish cloths, loofahs and even some cute fingerless gloves. I learned to crochet in the fall of last year (2009) so I was trying to stretch my skill level and learn and do as much as I could. I like crocheting, but I wouldn't say I'm passionate about it. So after awhile, my lack of passion combined with no sales combined with what felt like the onset of carpal tunnel I decided to go back to my first love... paper crafting!

In mid April I made my first card set and within a few hours of listing it, I had a special request for not only that set, but 15 more of the same card. Just like that- FIRST SALE! This happened two more days in a row to end up being three sales in three days! Needless to say, I was ecstatic. I finally felt like all my hard work had paid off. Since then I have tried to add at least one new item to my shop every day and have made six more sales since for a grand total of nine sales!

Now I am more motivated than ever to continue doing what I LOVE because when you do what you love, it's easy to love what you do!

Too Legit To Quit

Here's a great idea... I'll do something I love and enjoy and then I'll make money for it (or at least TRY to)! Sounds simple enough, but you know how that goes... if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. In September 2009 I set up an etsy.com account, but it wasn't until a few months ago that I actually listed anything for sale and when I did it was nothing more than one baby blanket I had spent countless hours creating and a multitude of dishcloths (which happened to be the first thing I ever learned to crochet). At that point that was pretty much the extent of my crocheting skills. I have since then listed a few more blankets, 2 of which I sold offline to family members, none of which I have sold on etsy. Of course I can't really blame anyone for not buying... the pictures are barely mediocre and the selection is, well... crap (though my dishcloths have had 70 hits).

In the past month I put down the baby blankets and picked up a broader range of skills, working feverishly to produce something original and fun... something someone might actually want to buy. I am happy to say I'm getting closer to that goal (at least I think so). But a week ago is when things got a little rocky. I discovered that to legitimately sell my items I actually had to register as a business... yes, that's right... an actual business! And oh boy is that where I hit a huge brick wall. I was full of questions on how to go about it, but the answers were elusive at best. At least 20 times a day I went back and forth in my mind about whether I should forge ahead or give up the fight. Luckily, my personal "mission statement" in this endeavor is this: "If you think you can, you can. And if you think you can't, you're right." (Mary Kay Ash) After making this my mantra I was able to keep pulling myself back from the depths of despair to overcome that brick wall in front of my head. Answers were eventually found and the process has been started (involving lots of fun forms). It is altogether possible I will never sell a single thing to anyone outside of my family (thanks for believing, mom!), but I know one thing is for sure... I am too legit to quit. In other words, I am awesome.
